2020. My word, what a year this has been so far! To think that 3 months ago I was playing football with my friends every week and now we are under strict quarantine measures – it really puts things in perspective in terms of what I value in life.
The real stand-out heroes of this period have been the frontliners (one of whom is my sister!). Whether they are doctors or grocery store cashiers, they are all putting their lives on the line in order to save the lives of others. Their goals and mission are aligned.
In many ways, this is what inspired me to start this business. I wanted to contribute to society in a positive manner so I used the extra time at home to create a social enterprise that revolves around my biggest passion in life – football!
I hope to create a business that inspires people to strive for more, to use their time in bettering themselves while also having fun. Personally, if I want to improve in something I usually set myself some goals to accomplish. With this in mind, the name Play For Goals was born. Goals represent not only football but also personal accomplishment.
It may sound simple but in order to get to this point, I came up with a list of goals and sub-goals. Each goal had a timeframe of one week and each sub-goal varied on the complexity of the task. Here’s an example:
Week of March 2-7:
Goal: Design the wireframes (hand-drawn designs) for all pages of the website
Sub-goal 1: Design wireframe of Home Page
Sub-goal 2: Design wireframe of Shop Page
Sub-goal 3: Design wireframe of About Page
Sub-goal 4: Design wireframe of Field Notes Page
Sub-goal 5: Design wireframe of Contact Page
”The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.
Bill Copeland
By breaking down the overall goal into sub-goals, the overall goal seemed less daunting. I then had a roadmap to achieve my goals, which allowed me to estimate much more accurately the time I needed to complete each sub-goal and subsequently achieve my overall goal.
This type of method can be applied to all aspects of life. Take learning a new football skill as an example. If your goal is to play for the first team once the season starts up, ask yourself what will give you the best chance of making the team? Write down your thoughts. Is it better fitness? Is it working on your close control or finding the back of the net more often?
Once you have established what you need to work on to achieve your goal, try to break down the foundations of this goal into small, incremental sub-goals. This will allow you to focus on the task at hand rather than feel overwhelmed or pressured by the greater goal.
Setting goals will make you more disciplined and motivated in these extraordinary times. What goals have you set yourself? Let us know in the comments section below!
Have a great weekend ahead!
