Thousands of people laced up this week as part of the Rainbow Laces Campaign and posted on social media in support of LGBT+ people in sport. Sport should be a safe haven for all. Sport is about everybody being able to participate and enjoy themselves.

With less than two years until the 2022 World cup, Qatar announced that rainbow flags will be allowed in stadiums in order to comply with FIFA rules promoting tolerance and inclusion at matches, despite the Arab country's strict anti-LGBT+ laws.

FIFA said it was determined to ensure that Qatar stages a tournament that is inclusive when the World Cup heads to the Middle East for the first time.

This may result in a more open society where dialogues on these traditionally taboo topics can be started and encouraged.

Society is slowly changing and, in many ways, football reflects society. But the fight for more awareness and acceptance is far from over.

Ultimately, it is not down to one particular group of people, nor is it about tackling only one issue.

Sport is a very powerful way of bringing people together. Together or apart, online or on the pitch we need to make sport a game for everyone.
