Across the globe, live sports have been suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The shutdown leaves inevitable gaps in our lives and sports fans looking to scratch that competitive itch have lost their favorite pastimes as they spend months self-isolating.

As the quarantine drags on, however, the gaming and esports scene has risen to the challenge of filling that void.

Until very recently, the idea that anyone can make a living by playing video games has been nothing but a pipe dream. Nowadays, with the explosive popularity of competitive video games like FIFA, Fortnite, and Call of Duty, not only is it possible, but anyone can earn well just by playing, provided they have the skill and dedication.

Competitive video games, or eSports, have become a multimillion-dollar business. Moreover, this year, global eSports revenues are predicted to hit $1.1 billion, reportedly growing by 28% from 2019 due to skyrocketing revenues from advertising, sponsorship and media rights to competitive video gaming.

Play For Goals sees eSports as another exciting channel to raise funds for marginalized and under-served communities.

In many parts of the world, economies are beginning to reopen. It’s only a matter of time before traditional sports are back in the picture, as we’re already seeing evidence of this resurrection. In New Zealand, stadiums are full once more thanks to a newly designed Super Rugby Aotearoa. And the Irish government has announced that all sporting activity in the Republic of Ireland can resume from 29 June.

That being said, the rise of eSports participation worldwide during this global pandemic is sure to see positive impacts that are not likely to subside as economies begin to reopen. Though still a nascent industry, eSports has been becoming more mainstream and this journey has been expedited during this pandemic. This growth normalizes the notion of virtual communication, making people more comfortable with the idea of online socialization.
